The Coronation of His Majesty King George III

1761 must have been the busiest year that Ede and Ravenscroft had yet experienced. Busy, and yet incredibly thrilling, for the firm was commissioned to supply the robes for King George III’s coronation.

Creating the King’s coronation robes was just one of the firm’s challenging tasks. The company’s ledger records – the earliest that survive – reveal accounts to clothe no less than sixteen dukes and forty-six earls. In fact, including the other degrees of peerage, Ede and Ravenscroft supplied well over 100 peers. It’s an astonishing figure. The tailors must have spent endless hours at their premises in Holywell street, tirelessly working through the night to ensure everyone’s robes were ready in time for the great event.
