Louis XV private office Versailles
The magnificent panelling carved by Verbeckt still remains in Louis XV’s private office in Versailles. Louis XV commissioned Jean-Francois Oeben to make the Bureau du Roi (King’s desk) in 1760. The bureau was famous not only for being one of the first roll-top desks, but also as the most expensive piece of furniture ever made. Miniaturist Denis Hillman faithfully reproduced the desk, taking nearly five years to complete the task. He also recreated the two Gilles Joubert encoignures (corner-cupboards) and Rene Dubois’ beautiful commode en console (chest of drawers to the left).
