Louis XVI Library, Versailles
Created in 1774 upon Louis XVI's ascension to the throne, the carved wood panelling is an outstanding example of the neo-classical lines of the style that bears his name. Kevin Mulvany and Susan Rogers recreated the Rousseau brothers' panelling in their miniature version of the room to reflect the beauty of the original.

Original to the library is Louis XVI's library table made by Jean-Henri Riesener in 1774. Denis Hillman's miniature version is the centrepiece of the room. Also featured are his miniature versions of three other Riesener pieces - the drop front Secrétaire à Abattant (far left corner), small writing desk (centre rear) and the elaborate marquetry commode (alcove).

Secrétaire à Abattant
Made from an original in the Wallace Collection, London, the unusual shape and intricate marquetry of this piece make it one of the most beautiful works in the collection. Veneered on an oak carcass with tulipwood and other woods, the piece is in two stages. The squared bottom, with its tapered legs, combined with the oval carrara marble top result in a remarkable piece of furniture. Attributed to Jean Henri Riesener. Louis XVI period.
